Aluminium
Aluminium is the third most common element in the Earth´s Crust and is also the most used non-ferrous metal on the planet. It is extracted from bauxite and through electrolysis it is converted into aluminium metal.
In 1825, the physician Han Christian Orsted succeeded in separating aluminum by electrolysis for the first time.
A large quantity of electricity is needed to extract aluminium from bauxite. Therefore, towards the end of the 19th Century the cost of extraction was so high that the value of aluminium was similar to the value of Silver. Today, by recycling aluminium we save 95% of the electricity that would be needed to extract it.
